Julián Álvarez endured a particularly hostile reunion with the Madrid crowd, as Atlético now appear willing to negotiate his departure.

Left out of the matchday squad for Atlético de Madrid's 2-0 win against Malaga—officially due to fitness reasons—Julián Álvarez returned to the squad on Sunday against Villarreal. Coming off the bench, the number 19 was loudly booed during warm-ups and again when his name was announced.

The Metropolitano won't forgive Julián Álvarez

Supporters mainly blame him for publicly expressing his desire to leave Atlético during the 2026 World Cup. According to reports, his entourage has also been in talks with FC Barcelona, his preferred destination. These moves have seriously damaged his relationship with a section of the Madrid fanbase.

Coming on in the 66th minute of the draw against Villarreal (2-2), the Argentine striker couldn't make an impact in what was a particularly tense atmosphere. At the final whistle, he headed straight to the dressing room while his teammates applauded the stands. Diego Simeone clarified, however, that this was a club instruction and not a new act of provocation towards the supporters.

A €150 million offer required

After a long period of firmness regarding their striker's future, Atlético are now said to have softened their stance. According to The Athletic, the club's hierarchy would consider offers in the region of €150 million in the final days of the transfer window. However, a sale to FC Barcelona remains off the table. No agreement has been reached yet, but after such a charged evening, it now seems increasingly unlikely that Álvarez will finish the season with Los Colchoneros.
