Belgium: Mark van Bommel closing in on Red Devils coaching job

Belgium has found its leading candidate to take the helm of the Red Devils. Mark van Bommel is on the verge of signing on as the new head coach of the Belgian national team, according to multiple sources. The former Dutch international is expected to replace Frenchman Rudi Garcia, whose contract was not renewed after Belgium’s quarter-final exit from the World Cup at the hands of Spain.

Talks between the Belgian FA and Mark van Bommel are in their final stages. A contract running until the summer of 2028, covering the Euro to be held in the UK and Ireland, is reportedly on the table.

Belgian sporting director Vincent Mannaert is said to have opted for the same contract length that was initially planned with Rudi Garcia.

A profile that matches Belgian ambitions

After Garcia’s departure, Belgium was searching for a younger manager capable of injecting new energy and building a project around a clear footballing identity. The ideal profile required a coach with strong leadership skills, a commanding personality, and a modern footballing vision.

Mark van Bommel ticks all those boxes. The former PSV, FC Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and AC Milan player already boasts significant experience on the touchline. He made a real mark during his tenure at Royal Antwerp, where he led the club to a league and Belgian Cup double in 2023.

A reputation bolstered by his Antwerp spell

His work at Antwerp has also won over several observers. Toby Alderweireld, the club’s former captain, recently praised Van Bommel’s methods and leadership, highlighting his ability to deliver a clear game plan while maintaining a positive and pragmatic approach.

Barring any last-minute twists, the Dutch tactician should soon become the new leader of the Red Devils as he looks to breathe new life into a side searching for a fresh spark.
