Birmingham City considering Hannibal Mejbri
Hannibal Mejbri could be set for a return to Birmingham City. The 23-year-old Tunisian midfielder is among the players who could interest the English club, particularly if John Murtough is appointed sporting director.
A move linked to John Murtough
Murtough knows the Hannibal situation particularly well. While at Manchester United, he was involved in bringing the Tunisian to the Red Devils in 2019, before approving his loan move to Birmingham City for the 2022-2023 season. During his time at St Andrew’s, Mejbri made 41 appearances, 38 of them in the Championship.
He scored once, from a free kick against West Bromwich Albion, which was later voted the club’s goal of the season. A potential transfer would be considered financially accessible for Birmingham, both in terms of the fee and the player’s salary. However, the possibility remains highly hypothetical at this stage.
Mejbri well settled at Burnley
The main difficulty could indeed be convincing the Tunisia international to leave Burnley. Having joined the Clarets in the summer of 2024, Mejbri is under contract until June 2028. The midfielder appears comfortable in his current environment and remains committed to Burnley’s project. Last season, he made 27 Premier League appearances, scoring one goal and providing four assists.
This season, he has started four league matches for Burnley. The club, now playing in the Championship, is counting on him in its bid to return to the top flight quickly. Birmingham could therefore try to take advantage of the situation if John Murtough does indeed take charge of the sporting department. The connection between the two men and Mejbri’s previous spell at the club are favorable factors.
