Brazil: Raphinha leaves the camp and returns to Barcelona
Raphinha will not take part in Brazil’s next friendly against India. After suffering a right-thigh injury during the 4-2 win over Australia, the winger has been released by the Brazil squad and will return to Barcelona to continue his treatment, a decision taken as a precaution.
Raphinha was replaced at half-time against Australia after feeling discomfort in his right thigh. Medical examinations did not detect a muscle injury, but did reveal slight swelling. The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) therefore decided, in agreement with all parties, not to take any risks with the player.
A thigh already affected last season
The decision to be cautious is also explained by Raphinha’s history of injuries. The same right thigh caused him several problems last season. The player suffered four injuries in that area, keeping him out of action for more than 150 days with Brazil and FC Barcelona.
The area was notably affected during the World Cup, after an injury sustained against Haiti. The Brazilian staff therefore prefer to end his involvement in this international break rather than expose the winger to an aggravation.
Raphinha had nevertheless been one of Brazil’s key players since the start of the camp. He took over the number 10 shirt, wears the captain’s armband in Marquinhos’ absence and has also become the national team’s designated penalty taker.
Brazil will not call up a replacement for the next match. The national team still have one training session to complete in Brisbane before travelling to India. The match against the Indian national team is scheduled for Saturday in Kolkata.
At FC Barcelona, Raphinha’s early return will allow the club to monitor the progress of his physical problem directly. The absence of a muscle injury is the main reassuring factor at this stage.
