In the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes, Portugal’s captain, spoke about the controversy surrounding the departure of the Al-Nassr forward from the national team camp. The Manchester United midfielder also revealed that he had spoken with his teammate after his departure.
Bruno Fernandes speaks out on the Cristiano Ronaldo situation
Before the match against Norway, scheduled for this Sunday in Porto, Fernandes spoke in particular about his conversation with Cristiano and the special place the latter occupies in the history of Portuguese football.
He said: “I spoke to him, and what I told him, I will repeat here: the most important thing is that, whatever happens, Cristiano Ronaldo will never cease to be the greatest symbol of our national team, our football and our country.”
He added: “For everything he has achieved, not only in Portugal but throughout the world. He has secured a place not only among the greatest players of all time, but also in the hearts of all Portuguese people.”
Bruno Fernandes also denied any divisions within the Portugal squad, assuring that the group remains united despite the debates surrounding the team.
He concluded: “The most important thing is that we stop creating problems; there is no division within the national team. It is one team and it will remain so, despite all the noise that may come from outside.”
Ronaldo’s departure from the Portugal camp last Wednesday came as questions continued to mount over his relationship with Jorge Jesus. The coach had previously mentioned that tensions existed between him and the Portugal captain.
Despite Cristiano Ronaldo’s absence, Portugal managed to beat Denmark (4-2) in the Nations League.
