Cape Verde: Ryan Mendes targeted by investigation in New Zealand
Cape Verdean national team forward and captain Ryan Mendes is at the center of an investigation launched in New Zealand following a complaint of alleged sexual assault and physical violence.
The reported events date back to March, during Cape Verde's tour of Oceania. According to the complaint, a woman claims she was assaulted in a hotel where the team was staying. She states that she filed a complaint with New Zealand authorities in April.
The complainant says she has medical evidence and forensic reports to support her account. She also claims to have reached out to several football authorities, including the Cape Verdean Football Federation and FIFA, using their protection mechanisms.
Meanwhile, New Zealand authorities continue their investigation to shed light on the facts. At this stage, no judicial conclusions have been reached.
As with any case of this nature, Ryan Mendes benefits from the presumption of innocence as long as the investigation is ongoing.
