Chelsea: Emiliano Martínez suffers jaw injury
There was considerable concern for Emiliano Martínez and Chelsea. The Argentine goalkeeper was taken to hospital after a heavy collision with Jarrad Branthwaite during the Blues' 2-0 victory over Everton in the Premier League on Saturday. The initial examinations proved reassuring, but a jaw injury was detected.
An impressive collision in the second half
The incident occurred around the 68th minute, when Martínez came out to intervene on an aerial ball and collided with the Everton defender. Both players remained on the ground, but the 34-year-old Argentine goalkeeper required prolonged medical attention. After several minutes of treatment, the goalkeeper was immobilised with a cervical collar before being taken on a stretcher to a hospital in Liverpool. The match was interrupted for around ten minutes.
According to information reported by Argentine journalist Gastón Edul, the head scan, as well as examinations of the neck and spine, revealed no major complications. Martínez remained conscious after the incident. However, the main injury concerns his jaw.
Mike Penders could fill in
Replaced during the match by young Belgian goalkeeper Mike Penders, Martínez could miss Chelsea's upcoming fixtures. The Blues are due to face Tottenham and Liverpool, before another important encounter against Manchester United.
The length of his absence will depend on the progress of his injury and the medical staff's recommendations. Pending a detailed medical statement from the club, caution remains necessary regarding his return to competition.
