Everton 0 - 2 Chelsea: Pedro Neto gives the Blues three points
Chelsea returned from Liverpool with three valuable points, inspired by a Pedro Neto brace against an Everton side that held firm for a long time but was ultimately punished.
Chelsea secured an important victory at Everton on Saturday (2-0), on matchday seven of the Premier League. After a tight and fiercely contested first half, Xabi Alonso’s Blues made the difference after the break thanks to a Pedro Neto who made the decisive impact twice.
The opening 45 minutes were chiefly marked by the intensity of the challenges, fouls and several bookings. Everton contained the London side’s attacks for long spells, and the two teams went into the dressing rooms level at 0-0.
Pedro Neto strikes twice
Yet Chelsea needed just 44 seconds of the second half to break the deadlock. After a move initiated by Morgan Rogers, Jorrel Hato got forward down the left before cutting the ball back. Cole Palmer’s run drew the defence away and left Pedro Neto unmarked at the far post. The Portuguese player controlled the ball before beating Jordan Pickford with his left foot.
Everton tried to respond but failed to seriously trouble the London defence. Chelsea eventually secured the win in the 90th minute. After Palmer’s free-kick was blocked by the wall, the ball came back into the box and Neto was quickest to place his shot past Pickford and complete his brace.
Chelsea climb as Everton drop back
With this victory, Chelsea now have 13 points after seven matchdays and provisionally climb to fourth place in the Premier League. Everton, who had 10 points before the match, remain stuck on that total and provisionally drop to sixth place.
Both teams will return to league action on Saturday, October 24. Chelsea will host Tottenham at Stamford Bridge at 17:30, while Everton will travel to face Arsenal at 15:00. Two important fixtures to confirm, or revive, their momentum.
