Moisés Caicedo wants to take his leadership role at Chelsea to the next level. Back in action after an injury, the Ecuadorian midfielder wants to continue his progress under Xabi Alonso. He also paid tribute to Thiago Silva, whose attitude and leadership qualities made a deep impression on him.

Caicedo wants to have more influence on the pitch

At 24, Caicedo has established himself as an important part of the Blues’ midfield since arriving from Brighton in the summer of 2023. However, his start to the season was disrupted by physical problems, which limited his playing time. Now back, the Ecuador international wants to make the most of his new manager’s confidence to continue improving:

With Xabi, I’m going to continue developing and show him why he can trust me.

The midfielder nevertheless acknowledges that he still needs to improve his communication during matches. Although he is already considered a leader within the dressing room, he wants to guide his teammates more through his words.

The coaches often tell me that I can communicate better on the pitch. They know I’m a leader, but it would be good for me to talk more with the other players. It’s not really in my nature, so I try to show even more through my actions.

Thiago Silva, a role model for the Ecuadorian midfielder

Caicedo also spoke about the influence of Thiago Silva, former Chelsea captain and an important figure in the dressing room during his time in London:

We learn from those who were here before us, like Thiago Silva. He was a role model for us. He tried to help us at every moment. The way he showed leadership was fantastic for all of us.

Now a member of the Blues’ group of captains, Caicedo understands the importance of this responsibility:

Being one of the captains is a pleasure for me and represents something very special for my family.

Caicedo’s return is a boost for Xabi Alonso, who is counting on his defensive work rate and presence in midfield. After the 5-1 victory over Bournemouth, in which the Ecuadorian returned to the starting lineup, Chelsea hope to continue their progress in the Premier League.
