Club World Cup: FIFA prepares a revolution for the 2029 edition

Barely has the first edition under the new format wrapped up, and FIFA is already looking ahead to the future of the Club World Cup. Several major changes are currently under consideration, with the ambition to make this competition one of the marquee events in world football.

Things are becoming clearer regarding the 2029 Club World Cup. According to multiple sources, Qatar has emerged as the frontrunner to host the 2029 edition. Due to the emirate's sweltering summer temperatures, the tournament could be staged in December 2029 or January 2030, mirroring the schedule of the 2022 World Cup.

Talks between FIFA and the clubs are already underway. The main sticking point is the international calendar, as holding the competition in winter would require a major reshuffle of domestic leagues and European tournaments. Despite these constraints, FIFA believes this window would provide better playing conditions.

An expanded tournament with 48 clubs?

The organization led by Gianni Infantino is also considering expanding the competition. After the inaugural 32-team edition, the number of participants could rise to 48, allowing for greater representation from various confederations and offering more opportunities to clubs around the globe.

Mexico has also expressed interest in hosting the tournament, but Qatar appears to have a clear advantage in the current discussions. FIFA is also weighing a change to the tournament's frequency, with the idea of holding it every two years still on the table.

If these plans come to fruition, the Club World Cup will undergo a major transformation, confirming Gianni Infantino's determination to turn this competition into a global showcase for club football.
