Corinthians: Memphis Depay will not be extended

Corinthians has officially decided not to renew the contract of Memphis Depay. In an official statement, the Brazilian club explained that this decision is solely linked to its financial situation and the need to maintain economic stability. This brings an end to nearly two years in Brazil for the Dutch forward, who arrived in September 2024.

Corinthians claims to have considered the option of extending Depay's deal before ultimately determining that a new commitment of this magnitude was incompatible with its current and future financial obligations. Club president Osmar Stábile is expected to hold a press conference in the coming days to explain the reasons behind this decision.

However, Depay's departure does not resolve all the financial issues tied to his time at the club. According to ge, Corinthians still owes the striker approximately 42 million reais in bonuses stipulated in his contract, particularly those related to individual performances and titles won. With interest, the sum could reach 77 million reais, according to figures provided by the club.

Extending Depay's contract would have allowed this debt to be spread out until 2028. Without a new agreement, Depay could now seek payment of the outstanding amounts through the relevant authorities, including FIFA.

A spell marked by silverware

Despite the complications surrounding his exit, Depay leaves a significant mark on Corinthians' recent history. In 79 appearances, he netted 20 goals and played a key role in securing three trophies: the Paulistão and Copa do Brasil in 2025, followed by the Supercopa Rei in 2026.

The Brazilian club also made a point to praise his "dedication" and the results he achieved during his spell. For Corinthians, Depay was both a major sporting figure and a considerable financial commitment.

A turbulent end to his career

This split also comes at a unique stage in the Dutchman's career. After bursting onto the scene at PSV Eindhoven, Depay made his mark at Manchester United before enjoying a more convincing stint at Lyon. His time at FC Barcelona saw him return to the European stage, before making the move to Atlético de Madrid.

But in recent years, injuries, fierce competition, and several club changes have defined his journey. His decision to join Corinthians in 2024 represented an unexpected twist for a player still associated with top-level European football.

Memphis Depay now finds himself at another crossroads in his career. His Brazilian chapter closes with three trophies, but also with a financial dispute that could prolong the turmoil surrounding his departure.
