Ivory Coast: Hervé Renard, a defeat too soon?
Ivory Coast lost to Cameroon (0-1) on Saturday, October 3, in Abidjan. This defeat represents Hervé Renard’s first loss since his return to the Elephants’ bench, after two victories in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Renard began his second stint at the helm of the Ivorian national team with two wins against Ghana (2-0) and Somalia (2-0). The match against Cameroon was primarily intended to allow the coach to continue his trials and assess several players called up for the first time or recently integrated into the squad.
Renard stands by his choices
The French coach had decided to make changes to his team and give playing time to several players. That approach could involve greater risks in a derby against Cameroon, even though the sporting stakes were limited by the friendly nature of the match.
After the game, Renard stood by his choices.
“I took risks with the starting eleven because it was the only opportunity to try out the new players. I take responsibility for the risks I took; that is part of my job.”
For the coach, the match was therefore primarily intended to broaden his options. The result remains negative, but the lessons learned from these trials will now have to be tested against the demands of the next competitive fixtures.
Cameroon had already caused him problems in 2014
The defeat in Abidjan recalls a precedent from Renard’s first stint at the helm of Ivory Coast. On September 10, 2014, the Elephants suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat against Cameroon in Yaoundé during the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The situation was not exactly the same. In 2014, Renard had just taken charge, and the defeat came in an official qualifying match. In 2026, the Frenchman already has two victories in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, and the match in Abidjan was a friendly.
The parallel nevertheless remains striking: twelve years on, Cameroon is once again the first team to defeat Renard during his time in charge of Ivory Coast, even though the 2014 defeat came after his first match, a win against Sierra Leone.
A defeat that reignites the debate over experimentation
The defeat against Cameroon could fuel discussion about Renard’s management of the squad. Some may regret the home defeat in a regional derby. Others will mainly focus on the opportunity given to the coach to test several profiles before the return of competitive fixtures.
The Frenchman was recalled in particular because of his experience of African football. He won the Africa Cup of Nations with Zambia in 2012 and then with Ivory Coast in 2015.
His record since his return therefore remains positive in competitive matches, with two victories in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, but he has now suffered his first defeat. The next matches will above all show whether the trials carried out against Cameroon have genuinely allowed Renard to broaden his options.
