Backing the Captain, Condemning the Manager
The public displays were installed at prominent locations in the capital, Lisbon as well as in Oeiras near the national team's headquarters at the Cidade do Futebol.
Created by an anonymous campaign, the visual layout featured a striking contrast: Ronaldo was depicted in vibrant full color surrounded by an adoring crowd while Jorge Jesus appeared beside him in monochrome black and white.
The accompanying text expressed unconditional backing for the 41 year old forward:
"Thank you Cristiano Ronaldo for everything you have given to Portugal. You will always be our captain"
Alongside a supporter scarf reading:
"Portugal is always with you"
Conversely, the displays launched scathing assessments of the national team manager, asserting that "Jorge Jesus was not up to the level of responsibility".
The text specifically accused the tactician of displaying "a lack of sensitivity in dealing with Cristiano Ronaldo" "mistreatment of the team captain" and an "excessive ego"
Municipal Removal Over Licensing Violations
The posters appeared in the wake of Portugal’s 4-2 victory over Denmark in the UEFA Nations League. However, the billboard situated near the Cidade do Futebol was swiftly taken down by local authorities on Friday morning.
The Municipality of Oeiras confirmed the removal in an official statement, noting that the billboard had been "erected illegally within the municipality" without adhering to established public space regulations and licensing frameworks.
"The municipality's actions aim to ensure compliance with current legislation, the protection of public space, and equal treatment among all entities" the council stated adding that enforcement teams will continue monitoring public areas to prevent unauthorized installations.
The Growing Rift Inside the Seleção Camp
The public demonstration follows Ronaldo’s sudden departure from the national team camp on Wednesday.
The veteran attacker left the squad prematurely following a reported disagreement with Jorge Jesus, sparking intense debate across the country and intensifying speculation that the all-time international top scorer may be on the verge of announcing his international retirement.
Tactical Authority Clashes With Cultural Iconography
The emergence of these billboards illustrates the volatile dynamic when an uncompromising, dominant manager clashes with an iconic sporting hero.
Jorge Jesus is renowned for demanding absolute tactical submission and authority over his dressing room, regardless of status.
However, Ronaldo transcends ordinary stardom in Portugal, he is viewed as an institution. Publicly alienating him risks triggering immediate fan backlash, placing severe scrutiny on Jesus' tenure regardless of positive results on the pitch.
