Rosario Central came from behind to beat Estudiantes (3-1), thanks to an exceptional performance from its star and Argentine football legend, Ángel Di Maria, and claim the International Super Cup title.
A free kick inspired by Messi
Among his two goals, Di María notably stood out with a direct free kick. The inspiration was directly linked to Lionel Messi, after he had seen him score a similar goal for Argentina.
“I saw Messi’s free-kick goal against the United States in the Copa América. When I won the free kick, I told myself I would try to take it that way. I’m not Messi, but maybe it would work. And it did,” Rosario Central’s player explained.
Di María then paid tribute to his former teammate: “He is the best player in history. I’m very happy to have scored this goal, because it brought us a great deal of peace of mind.”
Since returning to Rosario Central, the Argentine now has 49 appearances, 19 goals and 8 assists. He has also won two trophies with the club.
Di María: Messi’s final match for Argentina will be difficult!
In another matter, Di María spoke about the upcoming tribute match for Lionel Messi, which could be the Albiceleste captain’s final appearance in the sky-blue and white shirt.
“Yes, I will watch it. It will be the last time Messi wears the sky-blue and white shirt,” Di María said.
“It will be a difficult moment for all Argentines, but also for the entire world. When Argentina travels to China or any other country, the stands are full because of him,” he continued.
The former Argentina international concluded: “It will be a difficult moment for everyone, but this is what he has decided. Sometimes, we make this kind of decision and we have to respect it.”
