The time has come to turn the page. At 35, the former playmaker for the Leopards of the Democratic Republic of Congo announced this Saturday the end of his professional football career in a message posted on his Instagram account.

Regarded as one of the most gifted talents of his generation, Gaël Kakuta puts an end to a career that spanned more than 460 professional appearances. Trained at Chelsea, he went on to represent several European clubs, everywhere leaving the mark of an elegant, creative player with exceptional technical ability, especially thanks to his famous left foot. Over his career, he scored 219 goals and delivered countless assists.

Wearing the Leopards’ jersey, Kakuta left his mark with 92 caps and 15 goals. A true technical leader for the Congolese national team, he took part in multiple international campaigns and will remain one of the most talented players of his generation.

In his farewell message, the former international thanked his family, coaches, teammates, club officials, and supporters. He also shared that his greatest victory was neither a trophy nor a statistic, but his encounter with Jesus Christ, to whom he gave all the glory.

With this retirement, Congolese football loses one of its greatest artists of recent years.
