Emiliano Martínez: “I needed a fresh start”
Interview
Emiliano Martínez felt the need to turn the page. After leaving Aston Villa this summer, the Argentine goalkeeper joined Chelsea with the aim of starting afresh following the disappointment of the last World Cup. In an interview with ESPN, the 34-year-old reflected on this difficult period.
“The pain had been there for a long time”
Martínez explained that Argentina’s defeat in the World Cup final had left him deeply disappointed:
It was difficult for me to lose a World Cup final. The pain had been there for a long time. I needed a fresh start at club level to overcome the grief I had felt after that final.
After several seasons at Aston Villa, where he had become one of the club’s key figures, the Argentine therefore chose to change his surroundings.
A new chapter at Chelsea
Emiliano Martínez left Aston Villa after making 256 appearances for the English club. He then joined Chelsea, where Xabi Alonso quickly installed him as the first-choice goalkeeper. This new adventure in London is intended to help him regain his freshness and relaunch his momentum at the highest level.
With the national team, the goalkeeper seems to have already found his smile again. During the international break, he notably took part in Argentina’s wins over Bolivia (4-0) and Burkina Faso (7-0).
