Expert opinion: Why did Al Ahly fall short at the 2025 Club World Cup?

The Egyptian powerhouse Al Ahly exited the 2025 Club World Cup through the back door after finishing last in Group A behind Palmeiras, Inter Miami, and Porto.

This is a disappointing performance for the African football giant, especially after splashing out in the last transfer window to secure several high-quality signings.

Speaking to Foot Africa, Egyptian journalist Ahmed Ghonem offered his analysis of Al Ahly's debacle at the Club World Cup.

I think the team played good football, especially in the last group stage match, but ultimately fell victim to defensive naivety. At the highest level, you simply can't afford so many defensive mistakes against sides like Palmeiras and Porto. In my view, new coach Jose Riveiro struggled to manage all three matches, though he didn’t have enough time to implement a well-oiled tactical system. I also believe the players lacked focus during this tournament, largely due to the excessive media hype that ended up destabilizing them. It's a shame for Al Ahly, who had what it takes to reach the round of 16 and missed a golden opportunity to reap huge benefits from this Club World Cup run.

Al Ahly's mixed campaign at the Club World Cup

On matchday one, the Egyptian champions were held to a goalless draw by American club Inter Miami. In their second appearance, they fell 0-2 to Brazilian side Palmeiras, before drawing 4-4 with Porto in their third and final group match of the 2025 Club World Cup.
