FC Barcelona: A new contract extension is in the works!
FC Barcelona are preparing a new contract extension for Gerard Martín, who has become an important defensive option under Hansi Flick.
FC Barcelona continue to work on the future of their young players. According to MARCA, the Catalan club’s leadership have begun discussions to extend Gerard Martín’s contract once again, with the 24-year-old defender already tied to the club until June 2028.
Initial contact with his representatives is said to have begun in recent weeks. There is no urgency in the matter, but Barça want to send a clear signal to a player whose progress has convinced both the sporting department and Hansi Flick’s coaching staff.
Gerard Martín has stepped up
Having arrived from Cornellà in 2023 to join Barça Atlètic, Gerard Martín gradually earned his place in the first-team squad. Initially used as a left-back, he has made significant progress thanks in particular to his move into the centre of defence.
This versatility has become a real asset for Flick, who has several players capable of operating in central defence. Barça had already considered several defensive adjustments this summer, with Gerard Martín mentioned among the internal options alongside Pau Cubarsí, Eric Garcia and Andreas Christensen.
51 appearances last season
The defender’s progress is also reflected in his playing time. Last season, Gerard Martín made 51 appearances in all competitions, the same number as Eric Garcia. That figure confirms the important role he gradually assumed in the Blaugrana rotation.
This season too, the Spaniard remains fully integrated into Flick’s plans. He notably replaced Andreas Christensen in the victory over Sevilla after the Dane’s injury. Christensen’s absence for several weeks could give him even more responsibility in central defence.
Barça want to secure one of their trusted players
The desire to extend Gerard Martín’s contract is part of a broader policy of stability. The Catalan club are seeking to tie down several players considered important for the present and the future, while limiting their needs in the transfer market.
Barça had already opted to trust their internal defensive options after abandoning several costly targets. Gerard Martín perfectly embodies this strategy: having arrived quietly, he has now become a reliable and versatile member of the squad.
