FC Barcelona: here’s why Real Madrid turned down Rodri
Rodri is set to become a FC Barcelona player soon. While Real Madrid had a chance to sign the Spanish midfielder this summer, the 2026 World Cup’s best player no longer matched the style of Los Blancos.
According to Marca, Real Madrid was never fully convinced by the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner’s profile. This was true despite the player’s own overtures. Internally, there were concerns about his age and, above all, his style—considered not dynamic enough for what Madrid’s midfield demands. One phrase reportedly summed up the doubts at Valdebebas: “He holds onto the ball too long, that’s not what we’re looking for,” a Real Madrid staff member remarked.

This hesitation ultimately played a decisive role in Rodri’s decision to join FC Barcelona. The Catalan club made their intentions clear from the start, moving swiftly with the involvement of Deco, Joan Laporta, Hansi Flick, and several squad members.
Finances weren’t the deciding factor, as both clubs offered similar conditions. Rodri was mainly attracted by a project that better suited his playing style and that of the Spanish national team. With the transfer now finalized, the Spaniard is expected in Barcelona this Monday to complete the final steps of his move to the Blaugrana.
