Fenerbahçe: Sofyan Amrabat returns, but his future remains uncertain

Sofyan Amrabat is back in Istanbul, but his future at Fenerbahçe is still up in the air. The Turkish club confirmed on Monday the arrival of the Moroccan midfielder for his medical and to resume training, even though no deal has yet been reached with Real Betis regarding a permanent transfer, according to Türkiye Gazetesi.

After spending last season on loan at Real Betis, Amrabat was initially expected to continue his adventure in Spain. However, talks between the Andalusian club and Fenerbahçe have failed to produce an agreement on the transfer fee.

Given the circumstances, the midfielder's return to Istanbul has now become a very real possibility. Fenerbahçe has officially confirmed his presence in the Turkish capital. Following his medical examination, the Moroccan international is set to start his physical preparations at the Samandıra Can Bartu training center.

At this point, his presence does not necessarily mean that his future is settled for good. Negotiations are still ongoing.

A career at the highest level

Trained in the Netherlands, Sofyan Amrabat has gradually established himself as one of the most experienced Moroccan defensive midfielders of his generation. After making his professional debut at Utrecht, he wore the Feyenoord shirt before heading to Belgium to join Club Brugge.

His journey then took him to Italy, where he made a name for himself at Hellas Verona and later Fiorentina. His performances opened the door to major European fixtures, culminating in a loan spell at Manchester United for the 2023-2024 season.

With the Red Devils, he featured in 30 matches across all competitions, including 21 in the Premier League. He also lifted the FA Cup in 2024.

A cornerstone for Morocco

Amrabat has especially made his mark with the Moroccan national team. As a key player for the Atlas Lions, he was part of the historic 2022 World Cup run in Qatar, where Morocco became the first African side to reach the semi-finals.

At 29, his experience remains a major asset for Fenerbahçe. The big question now is whether ongoing negotiations will turn this temporary return to Istanbul into a lasting new chapter in the Turkish club's colors.
