With less than a year to go before the vote, Gianni Infantino is said to have built a commanding lead, while UEFA still struggles to find a challenger capable of taking him on.

As the FIFA presidential election, scheduled for March 2027 in Rabat, draws nearer, Gianni Infantino appears to be in a stronger position than ever. According to RMC Sport, the Italo-Swiss president has already received backing from nearly 200 of the 211 member federations, with no official challenger yet declared.

The criticism that surfaced during the 2026 World Cup doesn’t seem to have weakened his political base. Germany and France, however, have yet to reveal their positions, while UEFA is reportedly still considering whether to put forward a candidate who could challenge him for the presidency.

It’s a tall order. With strong support across Africa and South America, Infantino could be set for another term even without unanimous European backing. For UEFA, the main objective now is to provide a counterweight and reignite the debate over the governance of world football’s top body.
