Germany: Jürgen Klopp takes over the Mannschaft! (Official)

The German Football Association has officially entrusted its national team to Jürgen Klopp, who is tasked with rebuilding the Mannschaft after the disappointment of the 2026 World Cup.

A new era is dawning in Germany. On Friday, the German Football Association confirmed the appointment of Jürgen Klopp as national team manager. The 59-year-old tactician has signed a four-year deal, keeping him at the helm through to the end of the 2030 World Cup.

Klopp will officially take up his role on August 15. He succeeds Julian Nagelsmann, who resigned on July 3 after Germany's elimination at the hands of Paraguay in the round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup (1-1, 3-4 on penalties).

"The national team can unite us Germans like almost nothing else. That's exactly what makes this mission so special for me," the new head coach declared.

Klopp returns to the dugout

Two years after leaving Liverpool, Klopp is back to the daily grind of coaching. Since January 2025, the former Borussia Dortmund boss had been serving as global director of football for the Red Bull group.

His name had been linked with Real Madrid, but the German had consistently turned down the prospect of a return to club management. The national team role, however, proved to be the exception that convinced him.

Klopp boasts an impressive trophy haul: two Bundesliga titles with Dortmund, a Champions League, a Premier League, a Club World Cup, and several domestic cups with Liverpool.

An experienced staff to rebuild

The new boss of the Mannschaft will be joined by Peter Krawietz, Pepijn Lijnders, and Sven Bender. The first two were long-time collaborators at Liverpool, while Bender played under Klopp at Borussia Dortmund.

This continuity should ease the implementation of Klopp's principles, notably his high-intensity pressing and transition-based football. The main challenge, however, will be to translate this philosophy to the national team setup, where training windows are much shorter.

First test against the Netherlands

Klopp will lead his first match on September 24 in Amsterdam against the Netherlands in the Nations League. Germany will then face Greece and Serbia.

After early exits from the 2018, 2022, and 2026 World Cups, the goal goes far beyond short-term results. Klopp's task is to restore a strong identity to the Mannschaft ahead of Euro 2028, and then guide them to the world title in 2030.
