Ghana: Carlos Queiroz optimistic despite only one warm-up match

Despite a build-up limited to just one friendly before the 2026 World Cup, Ghana head coach Carlos Queiroz remains confident about his team’s readiness. On the eve of the Black Stars’ tournament opener against Panama, the Portuguese tactician assured that his players are ready to meet the global challenge.

Questions have emerged in recent weeks after the 1-1 draw with Wales, which was Ghana’s only warm-up game ahead of the tournament. This situation has fueled doubts about the Black Stars’ ability to hit the ground running in optimal condition.

But Carlos Queiroz dismissed this analysis, insisting that a national team’s preparation goes far beyond the number of friendlies played.

"Yes, we played one match, but that wasn’t the only game this team has played. There were others before us from which we learned lessons," said the Portuguese coach.

Preparation focused on daily work

The former Portugal and Iran boss explained that Ghana’s build-up has been months in the making, blending intense training sessions with lessons learned from previous international fixtures.

According to him, every coach wants as many warm-up matches as possible before a major tournament. However, the reality of the schedule sometimes imposes constraints that must be managed.

Focused on maximizing the work done with his squad, Queiroz believes his players possess the tactical and physical resources needed to compete in an especially tough Group L, featuring Panama, England, and Croatia.

The Black Stars will kick off their World Cup campaign on Wednesday in Toronto, aiming to make a strong start and justify the confidence shown by their coach.
