Ghana: Sports minister points to the Black Stars' poor performances
The Ghana national team's results are causing concern at the highest levels of the state. Ghana's Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, is no longer hiding his concern after Ghana made a poor start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
A disastrous start to the 2027 AFCON campaign
The Black Stars were beaten 2-0 by Côte d'Ivoire in Bouaké before suffering a 4-2 defeat in Accra against Gambia. Two defeats, zero points and last place in Group C. The record is a poor one for the four-time African champions. These poor results led to Carlos Queiroz's departure. The Portuguese coach resigned from his position.
"A structural problem"
Speaking to TV3, Kofi Adams pointed to a deeper problem.
We are concerned about the performances of the Black Stars. The problem with our football is structural and affects both leadership and talent
For the minister, the crisis goes beyond the simple results on the pitch. It affects the very organisation of Ghanaian football. Ghana does not want to relive the fiasco of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers missed in Morocco, where they failed to win any of their six qualifying matches. The Black Stars are due to regroup next month for a two-legged tie against Somalia, counting for matchdays 3 and 4, with an interim coaching staff.
