Hotto fires Pirates past Sekhukhune in MTN8 semis as Pedersen debuts
Orlando Pirates secured a 1-0 win in the first leg of their MTN8 semi-final clash against Sekhukhune United at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday.
The Buccaneers made their intentions clear from the onset as Yanela Mbuthuma dispossessed Daniel Cardoso before Simphiwe Masilela fired wide.
Pirates kept knocking until Oswin Appollis went direct from a free kick in the 33rd minute after Deon Hotto was fouled, but Melusi Buthelezi was equal to the task.
Buthelezi was once again called into action five minutes later, this time by Hotto, and stood tall with superb reflexes on his near post.
The Namibia international, however, eventually broke the deadlock with a powerful shot into the roof of the net on the stroke of half time.
Sekhukhune got a rare sight of goal in the 55th minute, with Thabo Nkwana firing at the Bucs goal but Sipho Chaine got a crucial touch to concede a corner.
Abdeslam Ouaddou introduced newly signed Sebastian Pedersen for his highly-anticipated debut in the 65th minute, much to the delight of Pirates supporters.
The Norwegian goal poacher got his first opportunity at goal in the 80th minute after a darting run, but saw his left-footed shot float over the crossbar.
Pirates, the defending champions, held on for the win and a crucial away goal ahead of the second leg at the Orlando Amstel Arena on Saturday, 29 August.
