Italy: Pep Guardiola approached to become the new national team coach

Italy is not giving up on its ambition to hand the reins of its national team to Pep Guardiola. According to various media outlets, the Spanish coach received a concrete approach over the weekend from Paolo Maldini and Leonardo, who were tasked with presenting him the Azzurri project.

The two former executives reportedly traveled to Barcelona to meet with the Catalan tactician. During their discussions, they outlined a four-year rebuilding project, aiming to build a competitive squad for the 2030 World Cup. The plan includes an initial phase focusing on the Nations League, followed by targeting Euro 2028 and then the 2030 World Cup.

For now, no agreement has been reached and Guardiola has yet to make a decision. However, this meeting confirms that his profile is now being seriously considered by the leaders of Italian football.

While the names of Roberto Mancini and Andrea Pirlo are also among the options, Pep Guardiola has now emerged as one of the top priorities for the Italian decision-makers, who are hoping to convince the current Spanish manager to take charge of the Nazionale.
