Italy: Roberto Mancini appointed new head coach, Buffon approves

A few days ago, the Italian Football Federation made the decision to appoint Roberto Mancini as the new head coach of the national team.

After Andrea Pirlo’s last-minute candidacy fell through, Roberto Mancini quickly emerged as an excellent choice to relaunch the Nazionale. At least, that’s the opinion of Azzurri legend Gianluigi Buffon.

"In the end, Mancini is the right choice from a technical standpoint because he’s shown a style of play that fits a clear project. If I were at PSG, Bayern, Real Madrid, Juventus or any other top club, I’d certainly consider him," said the former Italian goalkeeper to La Gazzetta dello Sport.

As a reminder, after being named head of the Italian delegation in 2023 following the end of his playing career, Gianluigi Buffon resigned after the defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina (1-1, 1-4 on penalties) in the 2026 World Cup playoffs.
