Kaizer Chiefs made it two stalemates in a row as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Richards Bay in a thrilling Betway Premiership clash staged at Princess Magogo Stadium on Wednesday night.

The Glamour Boys got the first chance of the game as Luke Baartman saw his strike deflected for a corner in the fifth minute, before Luyanda Khumalo unleashed a snapshot over the Amakhosi bar three minutes later.

Ronnie Gabriel's men drew first blood from the resulting goalkick, profiting from an error at the back as striker Nqaba Xulu pressed to force Chiefs captain Brandon Petersen into yet another mistake this season.

Chiefs leveled matters as Lebohang Maboe converted from the spot in the 17th minute after he was fouled inside the box, while Mduduzi Shabalala nearly scored the go-ahead goal six minutes later but his freekick went over the bar.

The Natal Rich Boys punished Fernando da Cruz's charges again as Xulu completed his brace in the 39th minute, heading home from close range after the visitors conceded a cheap corner.

With the KZN side maintaining their lead for a large chunk of the second stanza, Da Cruz made attacking changes with Wandile Duba and Faiz Abrahams entering the fray for Luke Baartman and Mfundo Vilakazi in the 66th minute.

Amakhosi eventually restored parity in the 77th minute after Siphesihle Ndlovu fired one into the top corner as he met a cut-back from Asanele Velebayi, who was introduced 14 minutes from time.

Chiefs, as a result, dropped to third place on the Betway Premiership standings , and trail Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns with two points, having accumulated eight points in the first four league outings.

Da Cruz and his troops will be looking to get back to winning ways when they return to Betway Premiership action with a tie against Siwelele FC at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Saturday, 05 September.
