LaLiga: Here’s why Real Madrid and Barça will miss the opening matchday

LaLiga officially kicks off this weekend, but the first matchday comes with an unusual twist.

Indeed, FC Barcelona and Real Madrid will not be in action. The reason lies directly in the 2026 World Cup schedule, which concluded with Spain’s triumph on July 19. Several players from both Spanish giants featured deep into the tournament and have only recently returned to training. As a result, an agreement between LaLiga and the Spanish players’ union (AFE) has allowed for the postponement of certain fixtures to ensure the stars get adequate rest and preparation time.

Barcelona will therefore begin their title defense on Sunday, August 23 in Elche, while José Mourinho’s Real Madrid will kick off their campaign the day before away at Espanyol. Both clubs will then quickly return to action with a midweek second matchday.

Barcelona will host Athletic Club on August 27, while Real Madrid will welcome Real Sociedad on the 26th. This exceptional scheduling gives the likes of Lamine Yamal, Pedri, Dani Olmo, Pau Cubarsí, as well as Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappé, much-needed time to recover after their extended World Cup run.
