Lameck Banda at the Heart of a Legal Battle Between Lecce and Al-Swehly

Lameck Banda’s departure from Lecce is taking a legal turn. The Italian club accuses the player of terminating his contract without just cause and has also implicated Al-Swehly.

The Lameck Banda case is now in the hands of sports justice authorities. US Lecce announced on Friday, August 28, that it had initiated several proceedings against its former player and Al-Swehly Sports Club following the unilateral termination of the Zambian’s contract. The Italian club is seeking to have the termination declared unlawful and is demanding compensation for the losses it claims to have suffered and could continue to suffer.

Lecce refers the case to FIFA

Through its lawyers, Lecce has filed a claim with the competent FIFA tribunal. The club is asking for a ruling establishing that there was no “just cause” for Banda to unilaterally terminate his contractual commitment.

Lecce is also directly challenging Al-Swehly. The Italian club wants the Saudi side to be held responsible for allegedly inducing the player to terminate his contract. Disciplinary sanctions provided for under FIFA regulations are also being sought against both the player and the club.

The proceedings could therefore have significant consequences for all parties involved, depending on the decisions of the competent authorities.

A second proceeding over wages

Lecce has also initiated proceedings before the arbitration panel provided for under the collective agreement between the Italian Football Federation, Lega Serie A and the Italian Footballers’ Association.

The move is aimed at establishing whether Banda breached his contractual obligations. In particular, the club believes it is entitled to stop paying his salary as of July 1, 2026, and is seeking the financial penalties provided for under the collective agreement.

Lecce also challenges an Al-Swehly video

The dispute does not end with the termination of the contract. Lecce also says it has reported to the competent authorities Al-Swehly’s use of images of Banda in a video published on social media on August 21.

According to the Italian club, the footage shows the player in action during the previous season and was allegedly used without the Saudi club having the corresponding rights.

Lecce’s statement therefore marks a clear escalation in the dispute. While Lameck Banda has now continued his career away from Italy, his departure could still lead to a lengthy legal battle before the relevant sporting authorities.
