Deeply affected by the loss of his father, Lionel Messi returned to action but was unable to keep Inter Miami's Leagues Cup hopes alive.

A few days after the passing of his father Jorge, Lionel Messi was back playing for Inter Miami. Coming off the bench at halftime in the club’s final Leagues Cup group stage match, the Argentine icon couldn’t prevent the Florida side from falling to Club León (3-2), a result that means elimination.

Given a standing ovation when he stepped onto the pitch with Miami leading 1-0, the Argentine captain played in an emotionally charged atmosphere. But his team then conceded three goals in just half an hour. In a letter posted on social media after his father’s death, Messi admitted to having doubts about continuing his career, though he stopped short of announcing retirement.

Stats that underline his impact

At 39, Messi remains a game-changer. During the 2026 World Cup, he led Argentina to the final, piling up eight goals and four assists.

Last season, the former Barcelona star racked up 43 goals and 25 assists in all competitions for Inter Miami. His swift return to action shows his commitment to the team, even amid an especially painful personal time.
