Manchester City: chairman’s diplomatic immunity at the heart of the case
The case pitting Manchester City against the Premier League could take on a new dimension. While the English club faces possible sanctions for alleged breaches of the league’s regulations, the special status of its chairman, Khaldoon Al Mubarak, could complicate the situation. According to the Financial Times, the executive benefits from diplomatic immunity in the United Kingdom.
Al Mubarak listed as a diplomat since 2020
Khaldoon Al Mubarak is the chairman of Manchester City, but he also holds senior positions within the government of the United Arab Emirates. According to information from the Financial Times, his name has appeared on the list of diplomats accredited to the United Kingdom since 2020.
This status would grant him protection from criminal proceedings as well as from most cases that could be brought before British courts. This situation could become an important factor if the proceedings targeting the club’s officials were to take on a judicial dimension.
Manchester City continues to contest the allegations
The Premier League recently announced that Manchester City had been found guilty of the various breaches it was accused of as part of its disciplinary case. However, the final sanction has not yet been specified. The possibilities under consideration notably include a points deduction, or even relegation. Executives who may have been involved in the incidents in question could also face the Independent Football Regulator.
Manchester City nevertheless continues to deny the breaches of which it is accused and has announced its intention to appeal the decision. This case comes as Manchester City is enjoying a perfect start to the Premier League season. After five matchdays, the Citizens have won all five of their games and sit alone at the top of the league with 15 points.
