Manchester City: how Rui Pinto managed to hack the club
The origin of the scandal engulfing Manchester City can be traced back to a successful phishing operation carried out by Portuguese hacker Rui Pinto.
The affair still shaking Manchester City reportedly began with something as ordinary as a click. A senior official at the English club thought he was receiving an email sent by a UEFA employee. The message contained a link supposedly providing access to a financial compliance report.
The executive clicked. Behind the fake message, however, was not an employee of the European governing body, but Rui Pinto, the Portuguese hacker behind the revelations known as “Football Leaks”. Through this phishing attempt, Pinto allegedly managed to penetrate the club’s servers and obtain a large quantity of confidential emails and documents.
Documents at the heart of Football Leaks
These internal data subsequently fueled revelations about Manchester City’s financial practices and helped trigger several proceedings against the club. The affair took on considerable proportions in England and across Europe, directly affecting the image of the Premier League champions.
Rui Pinto’s name remains central to the case. His protected-witness status is due to expire soon, once again highlighting how the documents were originally obtained.
City found guilty, then immediately appeals
The case took a new turn recently when an independent commission found Manchester City guilty of 114 breaches of the financial rules out of the 115 charges examined. The decision sent shockwaves through English football, amid the prospect of particularly severe sporting and financial sanctions.
Manchester City, however, did not accept the verdict. The club has appealed the decision and is challenging the commission’s conclusions. The proceedings are therefore not yet definitively closed, and any potential sanctions remain pending the outcome of the appeals.
A scandal that continues to haunt the Sky Blues
With the appeal proceedings, possible sanctions and fresh revelations surrounding the origins of the hack, the affair is far from over. Manchester City is continuing its season on the pitch, but the financial case remains ever-present around the club, including as it approaches its upcoming fixtures in the Champions League.
It all supposedly started with a fake email and a click. Several years later, this phishing operation continues to have major consequences for one of the most powerful clubs in world football.
