The incident occurred during a non-contact play, involving a pivot movement and valgus stress on the knee—a mechanism strongly associated with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) ruptures and meniscus injuries.

Early examinations point to a suspected ACL tear, which would explain the projected absence of nine to twelve months, with possible surgery followed by a lengthy rehabilitation period.

This situation is a heavy blow for Uruguay in the midst of competition and for Manchester United, who could lose their midfielder for the majority of the upcoming season. Further tests are expected in the coming hours to confirm the diagnosis.
