Marcelo Bielsa after Uruguay's elimination: “I failed, I leave nothing to Uruguayan football”

In the aftermath of this disappointment, head coach Marcelo Bielsa delivered a brutally honest assessment of his tenure, even going so far as to call his time in charge a failure.

Speaking to the media, the Argentine tactician first highlighted the missed opportunities by his squad throughout the tournament. In his view, Uruguay should have done much better considering the level of their performances.

“Of the seven points we needed to get, we only took two,” he stated.

Bielsa believes the main problem for his team was their lack of attacking efficiency.

“Mistakes are part of football. But we did not have an acceptable success rate when it came to finishing our chances,” he explained.

Key decisions during the match

The coach also revisited two crucial decisions made during the game against Spain. He revealed that goalkeeper Fernando Muslera, struggling after another costly error, had asked to be substituted at halftime.

“Muslera decided himself to come off at halftime,” he admitted.

As for taking off Federico Valverde, Bielsa explained that he wanted to add more attacking presence to the team by bringing on Federico Viñas.

An elimination full of regrets

But it was above all the coach’s comments about his own legacy that drew attention. Marcelo Bielsa did not try to downplay his responsibility in this failure.

“I did not manage to build a good team from the individual talents I had.”

The former Leeds United manager went even further, delivering an extremely harsh verdict on his time in charge.

“If you ask me how my time will be remembered, I will tell you it won’t be. What I leave to Uruguayan football is nothing.”

For Bielsa, neither the third place at the Copa América nor this World Cup appearance can be considered successes.

“The World Cup has no value under these circumstances. Third place at the Copa América has no value either. I will be remembered as someone who left nothing behind. I failed.”
