Morocco: Fouzi Lekjaa speaks out about Lamine Yamal

More than two years ago, Morocco made a sustained effort to bring winger Lamine Yamal into their ranks.

The FC Barcelona player ultimately chose to represent Spain on the international stage. Speaking to the media outlet Onze Mondial, the president of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, Fouzi Lekjaa, reflected on the young star’s decision.

"As for me, I don't know any Spaniard named Jamel. I've never heard of a player in the history of the Spanish national team named Jamel. We respected Jamel's decision and never challenged it. Our attitude towards him and his family has never changed. They will always be welcome. (...) Our history and our civilization make us proud whenever the Moroccan nation contributes to someone’s growth," declared the head of the FRMF.
