Morocco – Senegal: Motsepe reignites suspense over the 2025 AFCON winner

Months after a final turned into a legal showdown, Patrice Motsepe admits that the definitive African champion remains in limbo, pending a crucial ruling.

The outcome of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations is still unresolved. Patrice Motsepe, president of the Confederation of African Football, confirmed that the organization is still awaiting a verdict from the Court of Arbitration for Sport regarding the dispute between Morocco and Senegal.

"Regarding the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title, we are awaiting the final decision from the Court of Arbitration for Sport concerning the dispute arising from the final between Morocco and Senegal," said the South African official.

A title still contested

On the pitch, the Teranga Lions claimed a 1-0 victory after extra time in the final on January 18, 2026. However, the match was halted for several minutes after the Senegalese side protested a penalty awarded to Morocco—sparking controversy.

On March 17, CAF’s Appeals Committee ultimately ruled a forfeit against Senegal and awarded a 3-0 win to the Atlas Lions. The Senegalese Football Federation then appealed to CAS, seeking to overturn the decision.

The forthcoming verdict will go far beyond mere disciplinary action: it will determine the official identity of the African champion. The decision could either uphold Morocco’s administrative title or restore the victory Senegal earned on the field.
