Netherlands: Xavi Hernández appointed head coach until 2030

Former FC Barcelona manager Xavi Hernández takes the reins of the Oranje with a contract running through to the 2030 World Cup. He becomes the first foreign head coach of the Netherlands since 1978 and will be tasked with pursuing new international glory.

The Dutch Football Federation (KNVB) officially announced on Wednesday, August 12, the appointment of Xavi Hernández as the new head coach of the men's national team. The news was shared on the Oranje’s official X (formerly Twitter) page, introducing the 46-year-old Spaniard as their new "head coach." He succeeds Ronald Koeman, who stepped down after the Netherlands were knocked out by Morocco in the round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup. Xavi has signed a deal that will keep him in charge through the 2030 World Cup.

A first challenge with a national team

This appointment marks a first for Xavi. After a stellar playing career with FC Barcelona and the Spanish national team, followed by a managerial stint at Barça from 2021 to 2024, the Catalan will experience life as a national team coach for the first time.

His arrival comes after a period of instability at the helm of the Oranje. Over the last two World Cups, the Netherlands had two different head coaches: Louis van Gaal led the team at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, followed by Ronald Koeman in 2026. Van Gaal guided the Dutch to the quarterfinals in 2022 before handing over to Koeman.

A historic decision for the Oranje

Beyond Xavi’s profile, his appointment represents a historic turning point. He is the first foreign coach to lead the Dutch men's national team since Austria’s Ernst Happel in 1978. Happel famously guided the Netherlands to the World Cup final that year.

The KNVB’s decision breaks nearly five decades of Dutch-only head coaches and signals a desire to start a new era with a tactician renowned for his distinctive style of play.

Bringing home a continental trophy

Xavi’s main challenge will now be to turn the Oranje’s potential into silverware. The Netherlands have not lifted a major trophy since Euro 1988, their only European championship triumph to date.

With a squad featuring several top-tier talents playing in Europe’s major leagues, Xavi’s mission will be to take that final step. His contract through 2030 gives him time to build his team and target multiple tournaments, with a clear goal: finally bring a trophy back to a national side that has been waiting for 38 years.
