After months of speculation, the homecoming that Werder Bremen supporters have been eagerly awaiting is finally set to become official. German striker Niclas Füllkrug, 33, is on his way back to the Weserstadion.

A new return to Werder Bremen!

According to Sky Sport Germany journalists Patrick Berger and Florian Plettenberg, Bremen have reached a full agreement with West Ham United over a loan deal for the forward. The arrangement will keep Füllkrug in green and white until the end of the season, with no option to make the move permanent. The player is expected to travel to Germany later today, with a medical examination scheduled for Tuesday. Upon successful completion of the tests, the transfer will be formally announced.

Niclas Füllkrug makes sacrifices to return to Werder Bremen

What makes the deal particularly compelling is the personal sacrifice made by the player himself. Reports indicate that Füllkrug was so committed to returning to his boyhood club that he agreed to take a substantial salary reduction to ensure the move went through.

The 33-year-old has had a somewhat nomadic spell since leaving Bremen. Most recently, during the second half of the 2025/26 season, he was on loan at Italian side Milan, where he made 20 appearances across all competitions and found the net once. Despite a modest goal return in Serie A, Bremen’s faith in their former talisman remains unshaken.

According to Transfermarkt, the current market value of the experienced striker stands at €3.5 million—a figure that reflects both his age and recent playing time, but does little to diminish the emotional significance of his return to the club where he made his name.
