Nigeria: Sadiq Umar considers international retirement

The future of Sadiq Umar with the Super Eagles looks more uncertain than ever. The Valencia striker has revealed that he is contemplating bringing his international career to an end after being left out of recent squad lists by coach Eric Chelle.

Sadiq Umar may be set to call time on his involvement with the Nigerian national team. In a statement picked up by several media outlets, the 29-year-old acknowledged the intense competition within the Super Eagles camp. "I was not called up. Maybe my profile is not what they need. As you know, Nigeria is blessed with an abundance of talent," he admitted. As a result, he is considering ending his international career.

A decision expected at the start of the season

The former Almeria striker also hinted that a final decision could be made in the coming months. "I'm thinking about retiring from the Nigerian national team, but I will make my final decision at the beginning of the new season," he added.

This revelation comes as the Super Eagles boast a deep pool of attacking talent, with several forwards playing at the highest level in Europe. Increased competition appears to have diminished Sadiq Umar's chances of regaining a regular spot in the squad.

Since making his debut for Nigeria at the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations, Sadiq Umar has featured in 11 matches and scored once for the Super Eagles.
