Paris Saint-Germain defender Nuno Mendes will have plenty of time to reflect on his costly moment of frustration after the French football disciplinary commission handed him a three-match suspension on Wednesday.

Nuno Mendes will miss the next match with Paris Saint-Germain!

The Portuguese full-back was shown a straight red card in the 86th minute of the Trophée des Champions clash against Lens following an altercation with Michal Skóras. Referee Jérémie Pignard deemed Mendes' elbow strike a violent act, a description that left little room for leniency when the case was reviewed by the disciplinary panel.

For PSG, the punishment could not have come at a worse time. With the new Ligue 1 season about to get underway, Luis Enrique will now be without one of his most dependable defensive assets for fixtures against Rennes, Lille, and Monaco – three sides that will pose serious tests of PSG's early title credentials. Mendes will only become available again after serving his ban.

The red card itself was a rare blemish on the player's otherwise steady record in Paris. It marked his first dismissal since joining the club, but its timing was especially damaging, coming in the dying moments of a match that had already slipped away from the capital club. Lens' 1-0 victory condemned PSG to a Trophée des Champions defeat, and Mendes' exit only compounded the evening's frustrations.

What will sting most for the 22-year-old is that he now has an extended stretch on the sidelines to replay those final minutes – a moment of heat that has left his team shorthanded at a pivotal stage of the campaign. For PSG, the hope will be that their depth can absorb the loss, but the absence of Mendes' pace and attacking thrust from the flank is a blow that cannot simply be papered over.

The real test, however, will come in how the player responds. Mendes has shown maturity beyond his years since arriving in the French capital, and this suspension may serve as a sharp lesson in composure. For now, though, he and his club must accept the consequences – and wait until October for his next chance to make amends on the pitch.
