Pape Thiaw dismissed after the World Cup

The FSF has decided to part ways with Pape Thiaw after a disappointing run at the 2026 World Cup. Sadio Mané and his teammates finished third in Group I with 3 points, securing a 5-0 win over Iraq after suffering two defeats against France (1-3) and Norway (2-3).

After leading for much of the match (2-0) against Belgium, Senegal ultimately saw their hopes dashed, losing 3-2 in extra time in the round of 16. This disappointing outcome prompted the Senegalese football authorities to seek new leadership.

The son of Dakar returning to his roots?

A former French international (107 caps, 6 goals), Patrick Vieira was born in Dakar on June 23, 1976. He has never forgotten his roots, co-founding the Diambars academy, which has produced numerous talents, including Idrissa Gana Gueye. His deep knowledge of Senegalese football and his ties to the country are major assets.

A two-year contract awaits the former Arsenal midfielder, with his first big challenge being the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. However, negotiations are still at a preliminary stage.

First adventure as a national team coach

Patrick Vieira retired in July 2011 after a final stint with Manchester City. It was with City that he began his coaching career, first leading the U21s and then taking charge in the Youth League.

In 2016, he took the reins at New York City FC before embarking on spells with Nice (2018-2020), Crystal Palace (2021-2023), Strasbourg (2023-2024), and Genoa (2024-2025). To date, he has never managed a national team in his young coaching career.

A win-win adventure?

If he is officially appointed as Senegal's head coach, Patrick Vieira will finally have the chance to give back to his country of origin, which he never represented as a player. Out of work since November 2025 following his Italian adventure, the 1998 World Cup champion could reignite his coaching career on the Senegalese bench.

For Senegal, this is an opportunity to bet on a young coach to chase new glory at the Africa Cup of Nations and prepare the squad for the 2030 World Cup. To achieve this, it will be crucial to build on the foundation laid by Aliou Cissé and Pape Thiaw.
