Senegal: Bad news for Pape Thiaw

Thunderbolt in Senegalese football. The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) has announced that it has initiated proceedings to terminate the contract of national team coach Pape Thiaw and his entire technical staff.

Pape Thiaw will no longer lead the Lions of Teranga after Senegal's elimination in the round of 32 at the World Cup. Meeting on Saturday evening, the FSF Executive Committee unanimously voted to end the Senegalese coach's tenure. The Federation president has been mandated to forward this decision to the Ministry of Sports, the supervisory authority, in accordance with the current procedure.

A decision despite a recent extension

This decision comes just days after the end of the 2026 World Cup and is all the more surprising given that Pape Thiaw had extended his contract on the eve of the Senegal vs Norway match during the tournament.

Despite this extension, FSF officials have ultimately decided to turn the page and start a new chapter at the helm of the Lions of Teranga.

The identity of the next head coach has not yet been revealed, but the Federation is expected to move quickly to find Pape Thiaw's successor.
