"Disgraceful" Treatment of a National Icon
Morgan who has maintained a close relationship with the 41 year old forward since their explosive television interview in 2022, took to X to fiercely condemn the national team manager's handling of the situation.
"What an arrogant fool... Jesus was never good enough to play for Portugal and now he enjoys belittling the country's greatest ever player" the 61 year old broadcaster wrote.
The underlying friction erupted into the open after Ronaldo featured for 67 minutes in a 1-0 Nations League victory over Wales, only to be left as an unused substitute during a subsequent 2-1 win against Norway.
Infuriated by his benching, the captain reportedly held discussions with Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença on Tuesday evening before officially leaving the camp ahead of the team's trip to Denmark.
The No. 7 Shirt Controversy
The tension was further inflamed during Portugal's 4-2 victory over Denmark when winger Rafael Leão took to the pitch wearing Ronaldo's iconic No. 7 shirt, a decision that Morgan immediately criticized as a deliberate slight.
"After all Cristiano has given to Portugal, why the hell are they treating him this way?... Yesterday was his father's birthday and he played for his country the day after he died. It is disgraceful to watch this shocking disrespect toward their greatest player" Morgan posted.
The fallout has rapidly evolved into a widespread national controversy in Portugal. The ongoing debate over the treatment of the nation's most-capped player has already drawn public commentary from Ronaldo's sister, as well as the Portuguese Prime Minister.
A Proxy War of Egos
Morgan frequently acts as an unofficial public proxy for Ronaldo's grievances, meaning his aggressive rhetoric likely reflects the genuine fury felt within the player's inner circle. By weaponizing the emotional history of Ronaldo's sacrifices for the national team, Morgan is solidifying the battle lines between the player and Jorge Jesus.
Given that Jesus also managed Ronaldo at Al Nassr last season, the friction between the uncompromising manager and the global superstar appears deeply rooted and fundamentally irreconcilable.
