Rangers: Derek McInnes makes his return as head coach

Rangers have officially announced the appointment of Derek McInnes as the club’s new first-team manager. The former Scotland international has signed a three-year contract and takes charge of the Glasgow side with the ambition of reigniting the Gers’ fortunes on both the domestic and European stages.

Derek McInnes’ return to Rangers carries strong symbolic significance. Having played for the club between 1995 and 2000, he knows the institution inside out and understands the high expectations that come with wearing the blue shirt. During his time as a midfielder, he was involved in several of the club’s successful campaigns and has maintained a special bond with the fans.

“It’s a real honour to become the manager of Rangers Football Club,” he said upon his appointment. A self-proclaimed lifelong Rangers supporter, he believes that the club’s current context and new organisational structure make this the perfect moment to embrace the challenge.

Proven experience on the touchline

Derek McInnes arrives with a wealth of experience. His managerial career, which began in 2007 at St Johnstone, later took him to Bristol City, Aberdeen, Kilmarnock, and then Heart of Midlothian.

In total, the Scottish coach has overseen more than 800 professional matches. His most recent season at Hearts was particularly notable, as he was named Manager of the Year by PFA Scotland, the SPFL, and the Scottish Football Writers’ Association.

For this new chapter, he will be joined by his assistants Alan Archibald, Paul Sheerin, and Craig Clark.

High expectations

Fully aware of the pressure that comes with the role, McInnes stated that the expectations of the supporters are justified and that it is now up to his staff and players to meet them.

The new manager also revealed that preparations for the season are already underway and that he is looking forward to meeting the current squad in the coming weeks, while also integrating new signings.

Backing from the board

Rangers chairman Andrew Cavenagh welcomed the arrival of a manager he believes is the perfect fit for the club. He particularly highlighted McInnes’ knowledge of Scottish football, his experience, and his recent achievements with Hearts.

Meanwhile, chief executive Jim Gillespie emphasised that Derek McInnes has a deep understanding of Rangers’ values and the demands that come with the club’s ongoing pursuit of silverware.

With this appointment, Rangers are banking on a club man to open a new chapter and strive to restore lasting success.
