RB Leipzig: Martín Demichelis appointed head coach until 2028

RB Leipzig officially announced on Monday the appointment of Martín Demichelis as their new head coach. The 45-year-old Argentine tactician has signed with the German club until June 30, 2028, and takes over the first team with the mission of continuing the sporting development of the Red Bulls.

Most recently in charge of RCD Mallorca in Spain, Demichelis arrives in the Bundesliga boasting experience across three continents. His coaching journey has taken him through Argentina, Mexico, and Europe, where he has built a reputation as a manager who favors high-intensity, attacking football.

In a club statement, RB Leipzig’s sporting director Marcel Schäfer welcomed the arrival of a coach with strong international credentials. According to Schäfer, Demichelis has a clear footballing philosophy and the qualities needed to inject fresh momentum into the squad.

An already impressive coaching résumé

After starting out as an assistant at Málaga CF and gaining experience in Bayern Munich’s youth academy, Martín Demichelis launched his head coaching career with River Plate in the 2022-2023 season. In his very first campaign, he led the Argentinian giants to a league title and two domestic cup triumphs.

Following two successful seasons in Buenos Aires, he took over at CF Monterrey in Mexico, guiding them to the league final. Most recently, he took the reins at RCD Mallorca, securing several notable results, including a win over Real Madrid. Despite an eight-match unbeaten streak, he was unable to prevent the Spanish club’s relegation.

A Bayern Munich legend

A former central defender, Demichelis spent the majority of his playing career at Bayern Munich. Arriving in Germany in 2003 after coming through at River Plate, he made 259 appearances for the Bavarian club, winning four Bundesliga titles and four DFB-Pokal cups.

Demichelis also had a spell at Manchester City, where he won the Premier League in 2014. The Argentine earned 51 caps for his country and played in the 2014 World Cup final. Now in Leipzig, he will be tasked with leading the club in both the Bundesliga and the Champions League.
