RD Congo: Gaël Kakuta announces retirement
Gaël Kakuta has officially called time on his professional career at just 35 years old. The announcement comes in the wake of DR Congo's elimination by England in the Round of 16 at this 2026 World Cup (2-1).
A former Chelsea player, the Congolese attacking midfielder (31 caps) announced his decision on Instagram. He spoke with emotion about the end of a chapter after 17 years at the top level.
Having played for numerous clubs across Europe, Kakuta leaves behind a career highlighted by spells in Ligue 1 (Lens, Dijon, Amiens – three times), as well as stints in the Netherlands, Spain, Italy, and, in recent years, Iran and Greece.
English champion with Chelsea in 2010 and U19 European champion with France that same year, Kakuta ultimately wrapped up his international adventure with DR Congo, whom he joined in 2017.
