Real Madrid: Marc Cucurella responds to criticism over the lack of running

While he is currently with Spain, Marc Cucurella responded to criticism over Real Madrid players' lack of running.

Fourth in La Liga and six points behind FC Barcelona, Real Madrid have made an inconsistent start to the season under José Mourinho. The Madrid side's physical output has even come under criticism. According to the statistics, Real Madrid are currently the team that runs the least in La Liga.

Questioned by SER upon his return to the Spain squad, Marc Cucurella was asked to react to this statistic. The world champion was surprised by the figure. “The truth is, I was surprised because I could tell you certain things, such as possession or long sequences, but as for running… I think we run a lot,” he explained.

For Cucurella, this statistic is being highlighted mainly because of Real Madrid's current results: “The data is there, but I also tell you that we are talking about it because we lost the derby and against Betis. If we had won every match, nobody would be talking about the fact that we run little. They would say that they run very little but are very efficient, or they would find another headline.” He nevertheless acknowledges that these figures can help Real Madrid identify areas for improvement. “We will have to improve it, we will have to win matches and people will stop talking about it. In the end, data is also useful for improving, working on it and knowing that perhaps we need to give a little more or finish improving certain things,” he concluded.
