Real Madrid's ridiculous offer for Rodri

The financial gap with Manchester City and the lack of an agreement with Rodri caused Real Madrid to miss out in favor of FC Barcelona.

Real Madrid reportedly lost the race for Rodri due to what was seen as an insufficient offer. According to Sport, Los Merengues only put 40 million euros on the table for Manchester City, never raising their bid. The English club, however, demanded between 55 and 70 million to let their midfielder go.

This gulf quickly halted negotiations. Madrid also failed to finalize personal terms with the player, even though a contract agreement until 2030 had previously been rumored. Sport's report thus presents a different version of the talks.

Barça ready to outbid Madrid

FC Barcelona is now the front-runner to sign the Spanish captain. The Blaugrana are reportedly preparing an offer higher than Madrid's 40 million, hoping to seal the deal at the lower end of City's demands.

Under contract until June 2027, Rodri could thus leave the Premier League with a year left on his deal. Ballon d'Or 2024 winner and then best player at the 2026 World Cup, the 30-year-old midfielder would bring Barça his tempo control, press resistance, and leadership.

Mourinho closes the midfield chapter

Real Madrid and José Mourinho have now moved on after Rodri's decision to favor Barça. Barring a major twist, Los Blancos will not sign another midfielder before the La Liga season kicks off.

Yet, Mourinho had initially made Rodri his top target to reinforce Madrid's midfield. The Portuguese tactician now believes he has enough options with Aurélien Tchouaméni, Eduardo Camavinga, Federico Valverde, and Bernardo Silva. Madrid thus prefers to stick with its current squad rather than make a hasty signing.
