Senegal: tensions arise ahead of Patrick Vieira's appointment as head coach
On Tuesday, Patrick Vieira was officially named head coach of Senegal. However, the appointment did not sit well with everyone within the executive committee of the federation.
Patrick Vieira's appointment was made official via a press release following an emergency meeting of the Senegalese Football Federation's (FSF) executive committee. "The Senegalese Football Federation informs the public, the press, and all football stakeholders that its Emergency Committee met in an extraordinary session by videoconference on Monday, August 17, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. (...) At the end of the discussions, the Emergency Committee unanimously approved the appointment of Mr. Patrick Vieira as head coach of the Senegal national 'A' team." the statement read.
However, according to investigative journalist Khadim Diakhaté, whose information was corroborated by the Senegalese daily L’Observateur, Vieira's selection initially sparked "heated exchanges" and "tensions". Some committee members were not convinced by the profile of the former Genoa coach, who has been struggling in recent seasons.
Additionally, several members criticized FSF president Abdoulaye Fall for going it alone and not truly involving the executive committee. The debates reportedly escalated to issues of governance and adherence to rules and procedures.
